What is alpha? How do I choose alpha?

Alpha is the learning rate of the SOM. In regulates how the influence of a training data set deacys over the SOM from the most similar cell. Large alpha value is high decay and SOM is trained very locally, while small alpha value is low decay and most of the SOM is affected. Our experience is that alpha values in the range 0.4 - 0.6 work very well.
